Germain Nouveau et les astres

If Germain Nouveau had lived another 3 years, would he have learned of Hubble's work on the nebulae ? But for that of Monseigneur Georges Lemaître, he would have had to live past 1927 to hear of it.

But from "Immensité", what was his grasp of the facts known of les astres when he emerged as poet and when he emerged from the asylum ?

Would he have been amused to know that Hubble's name would be attached to the work of Lemaître ?

Anne Hébert Anne Frank

Did Anne Hébert, the poet, ever read an unexpurgated Anne Frank diary ?

Surely she would have been astounded by the candour, given her own slightly veiled exstases.

THAT text

The TEXT is in a baseball glove on the wall of the East Wing of the Annex Gallery of Galley Connexion located in The Fredericton Playhouse here in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. 

The phrase in question is in a poem: 

" ... an East Indan cobbler ... " 

about the fate of a baseball glove — but where? In New Germany, Nova Scotia ? 

The author appears to be Jordon Trethewey of vagabondtrust.com and winner of a STU "Robert Clayton Casto Prize in Poetry" - so a poet. 

I hung the gloves on the wall as a volunteer for AG and GC, but only heard the TEXT read at the vernissage — well, opening — and walked out. And according to a poster you may have seen, am a member of the selection committee ... but where are the minutes of THOSE meetings ? Ah - I see, so THAT's how it works ( I'm from away, you see ... )

The Freddie Playhouse is home to Theatre New Brunswick and a regular venue of The Atlantic Symphonia. The next big show on stage is The Atlantic Ballet. 

GC only recently became a not-for-profit after years as what ? A co-op of sorts ?  The Canada Council can explain THAT ! 

Former GC board members include such as Terry Graff, currently CEO of Beaverbrook Gallery, a provincial art gallery in Fredericton.  The current Executive Director of GC is the talented painter John Edward Cushnie.

The current show at GC-proper is that of Maryse Arsenault which itself touches on the history and construction of race, ethnicity, language, craft, memory and identity.

Zwicky, Wittgenstein, music

IN 1992, would it not truly have been "fresh air" if, instead of the praise of Ronald de Sousa, the U of T Press had broken with good form and marketing and placed a dissenting view of the book on the back cover of the paperbound edition of Kan Zwicky's Lyric Philosophy? On a tasteless dust jacket for an oh, so expensive hardcover destined for the shelves of libraries and so, discarded?  And then from the stacks to storage?

Consider that not a single page is colour - in a book of so many reproductions.  Not even the addition of colour to the bass clef.  Or the alto clef of the Mozart.

The music extends only across Wittgenstein's taste.  The melody of Ben Jonson's 1616 "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes" cannot find a place in the narrow band from Bach to Bruckner's 7.

Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner. Where is that Haydn piano sonata? The Weber clarinet?

Among post-Wittgensteinians, a question of good form?  „Listen - can you hear it?“

Hopefully another edition would include links to fine interpretations of each selection included.

But is it assumed the reader can read music?  Yet we could not have the Kant with the original German?  This was Toronto Studies in Philosophy.  They had published Fackenheim.  Who are these readers of Wittgenstein who cannot read him in German?

It is as sad as those books of Haiku in translation with largely blank pages and not so much as a romanji version of the original.  No special typesetting required (beyond a few diacritics.)

What explains the absence of Suzanne Langer?  A failing of her editor?  A misplaced set of note cards?  A mis-labeled box of index cards?  A single set of large file cards used on a plane while travelling back from an APA conference - and then misplaced?

Should this post be re-worked with an eye to form, to ensure balance, to allow thought to etch the mean plate of experience?

Wittgenstein — said to have interrupted a performance of a Schubert quartet ... a question of style.  A shoebox of notes, perhaps not quite in order.

Jedi Logic

This morning I was re-reading parts of Donald Davie's "Articulate Energy" on syntax in poetry.

I couldn't help but remember what I had heard on hulu.com as an advert during an episode of "The Daily Show".
Toyota was telling us that they are building cars for us LIKE they always have.  Wrong.  Bad idea.  Don't even start to make a comparison.  Perhaps the writer's thought was to plant the idea of preference, as in, "we do like Toyotas". Why are they not trying to tell us that they will be building cars for us just AS they have always intended and just AS they have so often done in the past?

In conversational English, a medical researcher in a CNN interview says that the treatment results in LESS visits to the emergency room.  He did not say FEWER nor did he mean "FEWER expensive visits."  But he is merely speaking, even if he is speaking as a medical expert.

Now a news report on healthcare legislation before the US House: the journalist tells us that the Democrats have been told "to try and secure passage" of a bill.  A reader conversant in German would not be surprised to write two infinitives - the double infinitive - as many textbooks have been written to try to teach you this curiosity.  We can avoid the construction with "in an effort to teach" or some such.  Maybe they were told to try to secure passage of the bill, but the report sounds like gossip fed to a reporter.

So how does "to try and secure" end up on the internet in a published CNN news report?  I have an idea: the likes of gmail and blog software miss this sort of error.  There is no editor reading the submission from the "contributor" - it simply passes muster as would most any comment from a reader which might be appended to the article.

At what point will internet news be reduced to the accumulating tweets of a Rick Sanchez?  I will try and tell you.  My blog entries are written spontaneously and with minimal edits and corrections - or they do not serve my various purposes.  I post them freely, less as I see fit and often as not as if in a fit.  Some are more fit than others.
